If you are sexually active, even if you have only one partner, you are at risk for contracting a sexually-transmitted disease (STD). Just because a person looks completely healthy doesn’t mean they are disease free. Get tested as soon as possible.

What Are STDs?

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are infections that are transmitted during vaginal, anal, and oral sex. They are very common and many people who have them don’t show any symptoms. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that 20 million new infections occur each year, nearly half among young men and women ages 15 to 24. The causes of STDs are bacteria, parasites, and viruses. There are more than 20 types of STDs, including:

Bacterial STDs

  • Chlamydia
  • Syphilis
  • Gonorrhea

Viral STDs

  • Genital Herpes
  • HPV
  • Hepatitis B and C
  • HIV/AIDS

What Are The Symptoms?

STD symptoms vary from disease to disease. Many of these STDs do not show symptoms for a long time. Even without symptoms, they can still be harmful and passed on during sex. Generally, if you do experience symptoms, they will include unusual vaginal/penile discharge, a burning sensation that accompanies urination, sores or ulcers, and pain during intercourse.
